When Gratitude Feels Heavy: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Micah Bolden, LCSW

Happy Thanksgiving.

I’ll be honest: writing this year’s message was challenging. The season typically emphasizes gratitude, abundance, and joy. But many people are experiencing uncertainty, tight finances, significant loss, and constant troubling news.

“Just be grateful.” We hear it all the time. But when life is difficult, forcing gratitude can feel dismissive and out of touch with what people are actually going through.

Some of you are struggling with basic needs. Some are navigating mental health challenges. Some are caring for seriously ill family members. Some are grieving loved ones who won’t be at the table this year.

The Practice of Lament

Instead of gratitude, I want to introduce the concept of lament: acknowledging sadness, disappointment, and loss honestly without minimizing these feelings.

Lament sounds like truthful statements:

  • “I feel sad because the world feels uncertain.”
  • “I feel overwhelmed because this season asks for gratitude when my life feels complicated.”
  • “I feel lonely because the people I love most aren’t here.”

Lament is neither dwelling in negativity nor hopeless. It is honest emotional expression. A feeling hurting today does not mean it will hurt forever. Acknowledging difficulty creates space for healing and allows room for appreciation of what remains good.

Multiple Truths Can Coexist

Here is what I want you to know: grief and gratitude can exist at the same time. Exhaustion and appreciation can live side by side. Sadness and joy are not opposites; they are companions in a full life.

You don’t have to choose one over the other. You can hold both.

To those of you struggling this holiday season, I see you. Your pain is real. And I believe that circumstances can improve.

To those of you who have persisted through difficulty and continue showing up, thank you. Your courage matters more than you know.

Whatever this season holds for you, I hope you find a moment of peace. You deserve it.
