FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
We want you to feel informed and comfortable before your first session. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We will discuss your goals, background, and what brings you to therapy. This is a collaborative process, and you are encouraged to ask questions and share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. By the end of the session, we will outline a plan for your treatment moving forward.
How long are therapy sessions?
Individual therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes. Couples and family therapy sessions are also 50 minutes. Anger management and life skills classes run approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on the session content.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we accept several major insurance plans for individual therapy, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Carleon Behavioral Health, Cigna, Kaiser, and United Healthcare. Couples and family therapy are private pay only. Please contact us to verify your specific coverage.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. We offer virtual (telehealth) therapy sessions for clients who are located in Texas or Colorado. Virtual therapy provides the same quality of care as in-person sessions and can be a convenient option for clients with busy schedules or limited transportation.
What ages do you work with?
We work with adults and teens aged 13 and older. For teens, we often involve parents or guardians in the therapeutic process to ensure the best outcomes.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you are experiencing emotional distress, relationship challenges, or difficulty coping with life transitions, therapy can help. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek therapy as a proactive step toward self-improvement and personal growth.
How often should I attend therapy?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions. As you progress toward your goals, we may adjust the frequency to biweekly or monthly. The pace of your therapy is always guided by your needs and comfort level.
Is everything I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship. What you share in therapy stays between you and your therapist, with a few legal exceptions such as imminent danger to yourself or others, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. These limits will be discussed during your first session.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations and missed appointments are subject to a fee equal to the full session rate. We understand emergencies happen and will work with you on a case-by-case basis.
What is the difference between therapy and coaching?
Therapy is a clinical service provided by a licensed mental health professional. It addresses emotional distress, mental health conditions, trauma, and relationship challenges using evidence-based treatment methods. Coaching focuses on goal-setting, accountability, and personal development. At Bold Steps Therapy, all individual, couples, and family sessions are licensed clinical therapy services.
What is CBT and how does it work?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched and effective forms of psychotherapy. It works by helping you identify negative thought patterns, challenge distorted thinking, and develop healthier behavioral responses. For example, if anxiety causes you to avoid social situations, CBT helps you examine the thoughts driving that avoidance and gradually build confidence through structured exposure. Research shows CBT is effective for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and many other conditions.
Do you specialize in therapy for men?
Yes. Micah has extensive experience working with men on issues including anger management, emotional expression, relationship challenges, racial identity, and breaking the stigma around mental health. Many men are socialized to suppress their emotions, and therapy provides a space to develop healthier emotional awareness and communication skills without judgment.
What technology do I need for virtual therapy?
You will need a device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or computer) and a stable internet connection. Sessions are conducted through our HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. You will receive a secure link before each session. We recommend finding a private, quiet space for your appointment to ensure confidentiality.
How does insurance billing work?
For individual therapy, we are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Carleon Behavioral Health, Cigna, Kaiser, and United Healthcare. We handle the billing directly with your insurance company. You are responsible for any copay, coinsurance, or deductible amounts as determined by your plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your first session to verify your mental health benefits.
Can I switch between in-person and virtual sessions?
Yes. Many clients use a combination of in-person and virtual sessions depending on their schedule and needs. You can discuss your preference with Micah at any time, and we will accommodate the format that works best for you.
What should I do in a mental health emergency?
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. For mental health crisis support, contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. Bold Steps Therapy is an outpatient practice and is not equipped to handle emergencies between sessions. If you are experiencing a crisis, please use these emergency resources.
Do you provide documentation for court or legal purposes?
Yes. For our anger management program, we provide a certificate of completion after you finish all 12 sessions. For therapy clients, we can provide verification of attendance or a treatment summary if requested. All documentation requests require a signed release of information form. Please discuss any legal documentation needs with Micah at the start of treatment.
What happens if I need to take a break from therapy?
Taking breaks from therapy is normal. Life circumstances, financial changes, or personal preferences may lead you to pause your sessions. If you decide to take a break, simply let Micah know. There is no penalty for pausing, and you are welcome to resume whenever you are ready. Your treatment records are maintained securely in case you return.
How is therapy different from talking to a friend or family member?
While supportive relationships are valuable, therapy offers something different. A licensed therapist provides clinical expertise, evidence-based techniques, and a structured process designed to create lasting change. Therapy is also completely confidential and free from the social dynamics that can complicate conversations with friends or family. Micah provides objective, professional guidance without personal bias.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ clients?
Yes. Bold Steps Therapy is an affirming practice that welcomes clients of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Micah provides culturally competent, inclusive care and has experience working with clients navigating identity exploration, coming out, relationship challenges, and the unique stressors that LGBTQ+ individuals face.
