What Is Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy is a one-on-one therapeutic relationship between you and a licensed therapist. It provides a confidential, nonjudgmental space where you can explore the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are holding you back. Whether you are dealing with a specific challenge like anxiety or trauma, or you simply feel stuck and want to grow, individual therapy gives you the tools and support to create meaningful change.
At Bold Steps Therapy, sessions are available for adults and teens aged 13 and older. Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes and is tailored entirely to your needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Your treatment plan is built around your goals, your pace, and your comfort level.
Our Therapeutic Approaches
Micah draws from several evidence-based modalities depending on what will serve you best:
- ✓ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you identify and change negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Research published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology shows CBT reduces anxiety symptoms in 60 to 80 percent of patients.
- ✓ Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and tolerating distress. Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT is now widely used for anger management, emotional regulation, and interpersonal challenges.
- ✓ Narrative Therapy helps you reframe your life story. Instead of seeing yourself as defined by your problems, narrative therapy externalizes those issues so you can address them from a position of strength and agency.
What Does a Typical Session Look Like?
Your first session is an opportunity to share what brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. Micah will ask about your background, current challenges, and goals. By the end of this initial meeting, you will have a clearer picture of how therapy can help and what your treatment plan will look like.
In ongoing sessions, you and Micah work together on the goals you have identified. Sessions may include exploring thought patterns, practicing coping skills, processing past experiences, or working through relationship dynamics. Every session is a conversation, not a lecture. You set the pace, and Micah provides the structure, tools, and accountability to help you move forward.
Who Can Benefit from Individual Therapy?
Individual therapy is for anyone who wants to understand themselves better and develop healthier ways of navigating life. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Many clients come to therapy because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or ready for a change. Common reasons people seek individual therapy include persistent sadness or low motivation, difficulty managing anger or frustration, anxiety that interferes with daily life, recovering from trauma or abuse, navigating major life transitions like divorce, career changes, or grief, and exploring identity, including racial identity, gender, and sexuality.
Therapy is also valuable for men who have been taught to suppress their emotions. Micah specializes in helping men develop emotional awareness and build healthier coping strategies in a space free from judgment.
