Trauma & Healing

Healing does not mean forgetting. It means the memory no longer controls you.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is not limited to a single catastrophic event. It can come from childhood neglect, ongoing emotional abuse, toxic relationships, racism, systemic oppression, or any experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope. Trauma changes how your brain processes danger, trust, and safety. Long after the experience is over, your body and mind may still be responding as if the threat is present.

Many people do not realize they are carrying trauma. They may describe themselves as anxious, angry, or numb without connecting those feelings to past experiences. Others know exactly what happened but feel stuck, unable to move past the pain no matter how hard they try. Both responses are normal, and both can be addressed in therapy.

At Bold Steps Therapy, Micah provides a safe, compassionate space to process what you have been through at your own pace. Trauma therapy is not about reliving your worst moments. It is about helping you reclaim your sense of safety, rebuild trust, and move forward with a life that is no longer dictated by the past.

Common Signs of Unprocessed Trauma

Flashbacks or intrusive memories
Avoiding people, places, or situations tied to the experience
Difficulty trusting others
Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
Hypervigilance or always being on alert
Nightmares or disturbed sleep
Persistent guilt, shame, or self-blame
Emotional overwhelm that seems disproportionate

How Therapy Can Help

Trauma therapy is not about rushing through your pain. It is about creating safety, building skills, and processing your experiences at a pace that feels manageable. Micah uses a combination of approaches tailored to your specific needs and readiness.

  • Trauma-Focused CBT helps you process traumatic memories and restructure the beliefs that developed as a result of the trauma, such as "I am not safe," "It was my fault," or "I cannot trust anyone."
  • Narrative Therapy helps you reclaim your story. Rather than being defined by what happened to you, narrative therapy empowers you to integrate your experiences into a broader, more complete understanding of who you are.
  • DBT Distress Tolerance equips you with tools to manage the intense emotions and physical responses that trauma triggers. These skills help you stay grounded when memories or situations feel overwhelming.
